Radon problems are very easily and inexpensively fixed by an EPA or state qualified contractor. Although the cost may vary depending on the size and design of the home, it seldom runs more that $800 - $1500.
Radon mitigation systems really work, permanently reducing concentrations by up to 99%. And since most design completely prevent soil air from entering the house, you may notice other indoor air quality improvement as well. Radon systems in no way diminish the dollar value of the home and are accepted nationally as a home improvement. Very little maintenance is required and operating costs are generally less than $10 per month for fan electricity and minor loss of conditioned air. Finally, since reduction systems lower radon concentrations so effectively and eliminate peak fluctuations, living in a mitigated home reduces one's risk of radon related lung cancer to as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) - even lower than living in most houses testing below the EPA Action Level (4pCi/L) with no control system. Radon, a Class A carcinogen, is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Your family may be at even higher risk if there is a smoker in the home. The EPA recommends remediation if radon levels are 4 picoCuries (pCi/l) or higher. Nearly 1 out of ever 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated radon. Consumer Federation of America (CFA) in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency strongly recommends that all home buyers test for the presence of elevated radon gas. For more information, please refer to the EPA's Home Buyer's & Sellers Guide to Radon and Consumer's Guide to Radon Reduction. To receive your copies, call the EPA's Policy & Public Information Branch at 202-233-9400 or your state radon program director. The Consumer Federation of America's toll free Radon Fix-It Line is for consumers whose test results are 4pCi/l or higher. Call 800-644-6999 weekdays between noon and 8pm EST for live operators.
